Default Help!!!!!!

I recently purchased a 1975 Kawasaki G-4 100 Trail Boss. The trouble i am having is, when starting it and putting it in gear. Where does the transmission lever supposed to be? Is the little black peg supposed to be in or out?

Default 1975 Kawasaki G-4 100 Trail Boss

I just recently picked up this bike for myself. It has a dual transmission. Question is, when starting it, and putting it into gear. where does the lever be at. I mean, is the black peg supposed to be in or out. I am getting a manual soon through ebay. I am scared that i will ruin the tranny. so if any one can help with this situation.

Hi Hiro,

Just for instance,... and I'm not saying that this applies to the Kawasaki, as it may not, but...

With the Honda CT90-110 and the Yamaha L5T-A, you've got dual range transmissions on both makes, and with both bike's you're not supposed to shift from high to low range while in motion with the bike running, and (or) a gear selected and (maybe or) the clutch engaged. The most obvious reason being that these gears for the dual range do not have synchronizers, you might grind the dual range gears and (or) lock up the transmission.

You should be able to start and run either of the Honda or Yamaha bikes in either gear, as long as it's in neutral, (green light in the speedo on..) when you start the engine, and that the dual range is fully engaged in either range.

But I'd wait for Bud to chime in here as it sounds like he's got the definantive for the Kawasaki Trail Boss.

Well that's the way I've always done it too. Of course you sometimes have to rock the bike back and forth to get the gears to change engagement, in neutral of course. I think I'll go putz around on my L5T tonight. Hope you get to play soon..

Hey I asked my dad and he said he honestly didn't recall much about that bike. I myself am not quite sure what lever is even like. I tried to find it in the pictures on the site to no luck. It appears it may be on the handle bars as I see an extra cable going to the right side. I'm thinking like Lewster that it's simply the dual range. If it's the only lever on the bike for the dual range (aka not something you hold while you engage it or something) then I would assume that in would be one range and out would be another range. Maybe try that out and see if you notice a difference in the gearing?

Also like lewster said you probably should avoid changing it at speed. On many atvs with dual range transmissions you might want to do it while it's still rolling at low speeds with no throttle applied. If it's easy to switch ranges at a stop then by all means follow Lewster's advice and do that.
