There are all kinds of threads relating to buying a first bike. Take a look at "Things to think about while buying a first bike". There's some good stuff in there, but disregard that post by Bradley.

I think you'd be a better judge of what you'd like or what you can handle after taking a beginner MSF course. They're very good and they'll help you get your license.

Depends on what you are like, size, and what you like. I'd say Harley but it all depends.

thats to big for me. my step dad rides a harley, and i sit on it and i can tell how heavy it is.
i should of said my build and what im into.
anyways. im 5'8 and weigh 160. i like more of the sport/street bike.

but if i were to get a Harley i would look at a V-rod

GS500 might be good for you. I'm gonna be starting with an sv650s next week (assuming i can find one in my price range when I finally have the cash in hand) and that's a good starter bike. of course, i was asking this same question a week ago so what the hell do i know? i've heard nothing but good things about the sv. the gs500 is a bike i really liked when i went to look at it but decided against it when i realized that i'd probably want to upgrade 6 or 8 months into riding, once i was more comfortable. but i'm a big guy ... 6'1" and 280. i think the best thing to do for you would be to stick to the 650 and under range, just go to a shop and sit on some bikes ... find out what just "feels right". one of the most important things is that you need to be comfortable on it ... it needs to be the right height for you ... you shouldn't have to reach for the handles ... it should just feel natural.
