What insurance agency's have you guys found best to deal with as a minor? Any thoughts on how to get the best rate?
I know some wont touch anybody under 18... Also while I wont be getting my bike for 5-6 months, I thought about getting my provisional permit now, so by the time I started looking for insurance I could just get my license... I am pretty sure most companies would prefer the license over the permit.... Thanks guys, oh and so far progressive is the only one I have found that does under 18, geico didnt. |

jraice - when I was a kid (nothing meant by that), I had the same problem. In my not too humble opinion, insurance companies are one of the biggest ripoffs in this country. Unless a minor has numerous moving violations, they should be made to take minors. But, they get away with anything they wish, because they have the largest lobbying organization in D.C. Bad news for young people! (And us, too!)
I know this doesn't answer your question, but even though I bought a Suzuki, I did buy it from a Harley dealer, and I went thru Harley Davidson's insurance program. You might call a Harley dealer and ask him. |

Yep, HD insurance. I had no idea they had their own program until I bought a bike from a Harley dealer. I had no idea where to buy insurance and needed it right away, so I went through the dealer. It was simple and fast. It also came with towing a labor road service, which I think is nice. I haven't had a claim and hope to never have one, so I have no idea what their claim service is like.
Oh yes, and this insurance covers all the goodies you hang on your bike, too, not just the basic bike. |

Ill look into allstate... Progressive as I said seems like they would, gieco wont...
Perhaps Ill just do whatever my dad does, I know I would have to be put down as the main driver and the rate would be based on that, but would it help if it was like a sub-policy of my dad (obviously well over 1 ? I am assuming it would help me out by going to his insurance company, as they would not want to turn me down and risk loosing him as a customer etc...

What type of bike?
Ill have to do it again, but I recall it being a LOT more then that from them... I am sure the being 18 part has a huge effect... But Ill run it again as I get closer.... 146 a year for bodily harm and uninsured motorist is very affordable but I have heard its more around $500... |

Nighthawk, building trust with insurance companies has gone out the window long ago. They could care less whether or not you're a "loyal" customer, and if you get tickets, they increase your insurance to compensate for it. I'm not sure you know, but the two largest organizations lobbying for lower speed limits are insurance companies and law inforcement. If the speed limit were lower, and people received speeding tickets, that meant more money for both organizations. What's more, there is no definitive proof that lower speeds save lives. Some of the fastest speed limits in the world are those in Europe, and yet they have a much lower accident rate than we do here. The things that are enforced are turning or changing lanes without signalling, and running stop signs. Also, when you pass someone on the highway in some countries, you MUST honk your horn and flash your lights to make sure they know you're passing. There are lots of things we Americans get away with that cause accidents. When those things are enforced, accident rates will go down.
After almost 30 years of being insured with State Farm, we finally had an accident. When I called the agent for help, he said the entire situation was my responsibility, and he did NOTHING. I told him that if I couldn't count on him other than collect commissions, then I was changing companies, and we did. So, don't ever think loyalty is going to get you anywhere with an insurance company. They don't care about you - they want your premiums. |
