Default Honda CT90 questions

hi,

i am looking into buying a CT90.

I did have a question that may help me narrow my decision.

i am looking at a 1968 with 7xxx miles. needs rings and ignition switch but otherwise pretty good- no title so i would have to deal with that.

the 2nd i am looking at is alot more money. 1971 with 720 miles, the owner is the second owner an older gentleman who bought it from a family friend years ago. The person who is bought it from is now 92 so that should give you the idea that he was not a kid when he bought it. He claims it looks and runs like new. he also has the original manual, tool kit, title and other accessories that came with the bike

do you know what the differences between the 71 and 68 year models are?

i am particularly interested in the tranny. someone told me that to use low gears you have to change the chain, is that true, is that true of both 68 and 71?

any help i could get to make this decision would be appreciated

I would go with the '71. I believe the '71 had a high and low range for a total of 8 speeds. The '68 required lengthening the chain to use the larger rear sprocket.

Both the 1968 and 1971 CT-90 have the dual range transmission. If you want a collectable, and it's complete the '68 is what you want, however it's very old and there are some differences in the engine, some parts can be an SOB to find.

Looks like this:

The 1971 is a much more evolved bike, with a few twists and turns and year to year model improvements and incremental changes it's pretty much the same as made up through 1979.

Looks like this:

Parts availability for the 1970 and later is great. Some of the body parts can be a little iffy, there were subtle (and not so subtle) changes in color from year to year. BTW, the plastic down tube cover likes to crack as the bike gets older.

A great resource is the CT-90/110 website. Look in the gallery, there you will find a complete collection of photos of each year and a list of what's been changed over the years.

I have a 1978, after a little fixing up it's been great.
