Default honda ct90 troubles

I have a 1974 honda ct 90. i rebuilt the carb and it ran good, just smoked quite a bit. so i replaced the rings and it hasnt even fired since, not even on ether. lined up timing marks on top dead center, ignition timing lined up point gap set, new spark plug, good spark, tigtened cam chain, valves open correctly. dont know what else to do, about ready to push it off the work bench, any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like the cam may be 360 degrees out of time.

CT-90. 4 cycle engine. The thing to remember is that the engine fires once every two revolutions of the engine. With the CT-90 it's possible to install the cam shaft 360 degrees out of time, so although it LOOKS like it's all lined up right, it may not be.

To set up the cam properly rotate the engine untill the piston is at TDC (the T mark on the flywheel) then back off the tappet adjusting screws and slide the cam in, what's important is that both valves are closed, with the tappets on the opposite side from the tips of the cam lobes. Once you've put one together it's hard to see how you could go wrong, but you can.

If you do put the cam in backwards there is a possibility that the valves could strike the piston...if this has happened there will be no compression.
