OK, for the last few weeks i have noticed scooters more then i normally have for some reason. now keep in mind while reading this rant that i know there are alto of level headed good people who ride a scooter, and i realize that not everyone is just a moron but i need a place to vent seeing as how i have seen a growth of stupid scatterer's.
the first thing that really bugs me about scooters is there accessibly to anyone who seems competent enough to drive a car. this here is the first problem. the fact that anyone with a regular drivers license and in some occasions a mer 500 bucks can get a scooter (i will get to this point later). this leaves a very large group that according to the government that can ride scooters. i feel there should be a short class or something to better inform these people about what they are getting into. the next thing is how unsafe the drivers and some of these "road worthy"(yes I'm still getting to this point but its coming i promise) scooters are. today i seen some morons zipping Thur traffic and cutting in front of people divining into turn lanes and all sorts of stupid stuff. the most stupid is talking on your cell phone while on the scooter. if it isn't bad enough people aren't looking for you you need to not look for them greatly increasing your chances of becoming a bug like stain on the front of some peter built or mack 18 wheeler. and would it kill some of these people to go to Wahl-mart and pic up a bike helmet for what 12 bucks or something? i mean you wouldn't need a full face helmet or a motorcycle helmet at all just something to protect yourself just Little bit. finally i get the the scooters them selfs. which often are some very old hunks of crap made in the S or S that barely keep up with a 10 speed mountain bike. Now don't get me wrong I'm sure some of these where good in there day but now just don't have the guts to go anymore. heck i seen a guy on a old moped getting passed buy a mountain bike. that guy probably couldn't hit 30 MPH if it was going downhill with a tail wind and if the rider was 100 pounds and had been eating cabbage for a week and there farts where like an afterburner on a fighter jet. the fact is that some of these scoots are just not safe anymore and where never really safe to begin with. like this other guy the other day with no directionals at all. who almost caused a 5 car pile up because the half wit of a driver couldn't remember that they made hand signals in these cases where you have no directionals. lets put it this way if your scooter cant do 35 at the least with you on it and on flat ground its unsafe. the next class of scootatear(scoot-a-tear thats the correct way to say that new word i jsut made up for this rant) is one who bought a brand new scooter but skimped on the price a bit and bought some POS made in frickin china now this is just bad for many reasons that are very political and such so I'm not gonna get to far into that but lets just say the factory workers in these china factory's for scooters aren't payed well art treated well and people bitch at wal-mart for selling cloths made in some other places with crappy work conditions so why buy your scooter form the same people. not to mention the quality of there china POSes are very low and you get what you pay for. but i would to thank the readers whoever you are. and remind people that I'm not mad at all people who ride scooters and I'm sure if your reading this and you own a scooter you don't fall into the people i discus in this rant. Heh,
In Massachusetts you have to have an M license for scooters, only bicycle and mopeds don't require one. But, apart from bad drivers/riders, by law, every vehicle must be treated the same. If a jerk riding a bicycle in the middle of the road there is nothing you can do but wait for the passing lane and pass him (again, by law, for others - everything goes :D), unless there is a bicycle route and he's not on it then of course he's wrong. So, the other perspective: when you're on a 2 wheel vehicle (bicycle, scooters, motorcycles) by law you should wait in line (e.g. traffic lights). People normally let bicycles go because pretty much most of them are riding on the side of the road anyway (thank god!). So, if you ask me: man I've been pissed at cagers passing me (while I'm on my motorcycle) on the same lane, but then I thought about it - I've seen WAAAY more motorcyclists passing cagers on the SAME lane (traffic jam, red lights, etc), so you know what they say: "It works both ways", and I don't really know how to stop that but go by the law and take care of myself, maybe a little selfish but show me a way to get out of it. |

YamFan:
Here in Georgia, anything 50cc and under do not require a license. I think that the rant was covering both "scooters", motor-driven cycles, and mopeds... I think he/she was describing any small bike that isn't safe to be on the roads. Natural Selection... Yep. I learned how to ride on a little 50cc "Soft Tail" Baby Rocket "scooter" or moped. It has front & rear brakes, clutch and 4 gears. Never left the neighborhood and was one of those that would do 45, down hill, tail wind, etc. If a car got behind me, I'll pull over as soon as I saw them and wait for them to pass me. Not only did I not want to be a hood ornament, I put myself in the cagers position and realize how frustrated I'd be! I think scooters/mopeds, etc are fine, (assuming they are in good working condition), but they do have their "time and place". In front of a car, going slower than the speed limit is not the time or place for sure! |
