Default Baffled by the Bandit!

I picked up a Gsx-r last weekend sold as a 2001 Bandit with the 1200 cc engine. It was evidently a streetfighter/race bike. Turns out the frame is from a 1992 GSX-r 750 but I am having a real hard time proving the engine to be a 1200. I need to order parts and found Ron Ayers site to be really helpful. My big question to the forum is:
By looking at the engine can you tell the difference between a 750, 1100 or 1200 GSXr?
If so HOW can you tell the size and year?
And for the smart ones I have already called the block number in to Suzuki and it matches 22 different models ~from a 250 all the way up to the 1500. Rumor has it that some folks can count the fins and tell you year make and model? Rumor or Fact?
Thank you all in advance for your help!

most GSX-R's won't have fins..... Some older oil cooled ones might

the cc size should be printed on the block somewhere

I belive the oil cooled Bandit 1200 lump is "borrowed" from the early GSX1100R's and bored out a bit... As for identifying what cc it is... I think only the 1200's had a hydraulic clutch. Not 100% sure though. But yeah, it should have the cylinder capacity stamped on it somewhere, might be behind the cylinders. Not near the oil filler though, don't think they made a 2800cc GSX-R
