im not 100% sure but it sounds like it might be a stuck regulator. the early models had a regulator with points that might stick.

Oh boy! I love electrical problems....
Sounds to me that you need to do a lot of backing up. You'll need to repair the damage caused by the fire (yes fire, 'where there's smoke there's fire). Get a wiring schematic to help you figure out what burned and what is power and what is ground. (Hint: Ground circuits NEVER have power unless wired backwards or not connected to ground.)
Your friend in all of this might be the fuse block and fuse wires (if equipped). Sometimes the fuses will blow before total melt-down. Typical bike wiring configurations go from battery to starter (big wire) and battery to fuse block then to headlamp necilline (bucket). From there, it splices out to the various other functions. Then after all of this, the power returns to the battery by way of the chassis and engine block, where the battery negative is connected.
Tip: assuming positive is positive and negative is negative, shorts burn back toward power from the point of short.
Share a mechanic's secret (not so secret): Electricity (amperes) flow from negative TO positive (the Brits were right all along!)
Good luck!
