In Cocoa Florida, an anti-theft tracking device led Sheriff's Deputies to a motorcycle chop shop. Police have recovered over $100,000 in motorcycles and parts that may have been stolen from all over the country. Agents are investigating the possibility that this may be part of a larger operation and are exploring the potential relationship to hundreds of other stolen motorcycle cases.

an anti-theft tracking device ?
Is it necessary for the bike ? I think if you use the traditional lock, that's enough. Miss Mio

A friend of mine had 2 bikes stolen in the early 80's on the east side of Milwaukee. Both bikes were locked, stolen just outside of his place of work. A lock doesn't help much when a couple guys pick the bike up and through it on a trailer or a lift on the back of a truck. I'm all for the tracking devices, got this guy caught.

Was your bike stolen ?
you had beffer to use the lock for your bike or ensure the safety parking space. Everyone couldn't avoid it if someone really want it.

i had a 2005 hayabusa stolen back in august. i had the bike for 2 weeks before it was stolen and regret that i did not have insurance on it. so i have to pay for the bike so some low life can ride it. there is a video on youtube of some guys breaking in a motorcycle shop and within 10 minutes had stolen 7 or 8 bikes and were gone. 4 guys can easily pick one up so the lock is pointless there. so yeah i think something like lo jack would be a great investment. the guy that thinks the lock is enough obviously hasnt had one stolen....

LoJack is available for motorcycles. If you live or work in an area that is prone to bike theft, LoJack might be the ticket.
The only issue with LoJack is that you must report the bike stolen to your local constabulary, once this is done the VIN number is placed onto a national stolen vehicles list, this triggers the system. The LoJack box is a small hidden transceiver on your motorcycle, - it receives a signal that turns on a small transmitter. No audible alarm is triggered-the thieves don't know it working. Specially equipped police cars have equipment to locate a LoJack beacon - so the officers know that your bike is stolen from the Hot-sheet, when they get in range of the lojack device they are notified it's on and can track the LoJack transmitter quickly and efficiently. So the police know the bike is stolen, they just don't know where it is, the LoJack simply allows the police to find the vehicle. The problem: You must report the bike stolen first. If you rode the bike to work you might not miss it for several hours giving the thefts plenty of time to get to to the chop-shop find and disable the LoJack-before it was ever turned on. One this is certain; if you have one of these on the bike your chances of getting it back are greatly improved. |

Long time ago, in Dallas, I lived in a not so nice neighborhood and locked my bike to a tree, with heavy chain, right outside my front door. One day I came out and found my bike gone. The chain was still there, as was the lock, locked securely to the chain. It seems that the local tow truck companies had a license to steal. Anything they found illegally parked, they could tow. Cost me $67 to get my bike back.
