muffler or catalytic converter going bad

Sounds like exhaust problems from hole in muffler to broken flange at the catalytic convertor.

That V-8 is in bad shape if it's only running like a V-twin.

Check the exhaust system for leaks, inspect the catalytic converter and replace them if necessary.
