Default CMX250C Recall

Howdy,
I just bought a Nighthawk 250 (CB250), 2007 model, which is mechanically identical to the Honda Rebel (CMX250c). Someone told me there is a serious mechanical issue with the 2007 Honda Rebel, and some dealers are failing to warn owners about it. According to the NHTSA, the problem will cause engine oil to spray into the back wheel, and only applies to the CMX250C (Rebel). Needless to say, this is an extremely dangerous condition. The NHTSA does not include the CB250 (Nighthawk) in the recall. However, since both the Nighthawk and the Rebel are mechanically identical, wouldn't a problem on the Rebel also be a problem on the Nighthawk? My dealer told me not to worry about it. Well, that's easy for him to say; he's not the one crashing if he's wrong. Has anyone heard whether the Recall applies to the Nighthawk?

I didn't see anything on this site for the Rebel or Nighthawk. http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/mo...nda/index.html That motor has been around forever and I kinda doubt a new problem just cropped up out of nowhere.

Default CMX250C Recall

Below is what I found in safercar_dot_gov under "RECALLS." This website is maintained by the NHTSA. Thus, it should be very accurate.

************************************************** **
Make : HONDA Model : CMX250C Year : 2007
Manufacturer : HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 07V128000 Mfr's Report Date : MAR 16, 2007
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 8020
Summary:
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE CRANKCASE BREATHER SEPARATOR MAY BE DEFECTED. DURING THE MOLDING PROCESS, THE BREATHER PASSAGE MAY HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY A THIN LAYER OF THE INJECTED PLASTIC MATERIAL. THIS BLOCKAGE WILL CREATE A BUILD-UP OF PRESSURE INSIDE THE CRANKCASE AND MAY CAUSE THE LEFT SIDE ENGINE SEAL TO BE PUSHED OUT OF POSITION AND AN OIL LEAK WILL OCCUR.
Consequence:
OIL LEAKING FROM THE FAILED SEAL WHILE RIDING CAN SPRAY ONTO THE REAR TIRE OR THE ROAD, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BREATHER SEPARATOR, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 30, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.
Notes:
CUSTOMERS MAY CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION¿S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153)

If it's just on the Rebel and not on the Nighthawk I wouldn't worry. Probably the Nighthawk has a different breather than a Rebel.

I guess the Rebel and the Nighthawk are less alike than I thought.

I'm almost certain the only thing they share are the engine and related electronics.
