Default Holy crap! My shifter fell off!

I fixed it though.. Scared the hell out of me when it happened, I wasn't riding, I was simply on it backing it up so I could get to something in my garage. I moved the bike, and I hear " clink clink clink...." I looked down and saw my shifter hanging by the cable still attached to the bike, just kinda swaying there. I calmly put the side stand down, and bent over to diagnose the problem, while swearing like drunken sailor. I saw the bolt, and the two washers sitting underneath the bike, and put two and two together. I screwed it back in, and have locktite on my list for todays pick up items......

Has anyone else had that problem? The shifter bolt actually loosens while riding?

um...to answer that question I guess we'd need to know if you're talking about any bike or just a really old one.

That sounds like something I'd not like to see...imagine if it happened while riding!

You know what they always say - "Periodically check all bolts for tightness". I always thought that was just to cover their asses, now I see it's legit.

BTW, this has never happened to me. I will now ensure that it never does!

I was filming my friend who was looking for sponsorships for motocross riding and his shifter flew off while he was in the air. Found it, fixed it, did it again and then his chain went! Just a bad day but it happens sometimes.

Had one break on a trip once. Damn lever just broke right off. you could see a big air bubble in the casting where it snapped off. Had to walk back to a VDOT worksite, guy gave me a rusty set of vice grips to clamp on to the end of what was left. And thats what I used to get home.

I am a huge fan of loctite, I need to buy some stock in that company. Yeah having one break in mid air, and then a chain go... I would call it a day, and go home and start drinking.

Using vice grips.... thats just amusing, glad you made it home though.

At least the shifter did not come off while riding and fly in the wheel spokes and lock the wheel now that would suck!

I'm worried my muffler pipes are going to rust off and send me flying.
If the rust on my muffler pipes ever falls out of love with each other, and quit holding hands I'm in trouble.:D
