I just traded in my ole 06 CBR 600RR for a 2008 Vstar 1100 custom and so far i love it now i am still in the breakin phase but my question is because the highways in idaho are 75 MPH is it safe to run it at that speed can the vtwin handle the rpms safely. This is my fourth bike and the three before all sport bikes and i could wind them up all day and not that i am looking for it to be like them but i am just worried about the engine at those speeds?

I have an 01 vstar custom and I think the motor will be just fine, no problem.
However, I'd consider the 1100 to be a 60 mph bike, maybe 65. When you hit 70+, it just doesn't feel good to me. The need for a 6th gear shows up, the motor is screaming...I just don't like it for those high speed rides. IMO!!!!!!, the vstar 1100 is a highway bike and a around town bike, and a damn good one. It just doesn't do real well on interstate at those speeds. All of this is just my opinion though. |

I rode an 1100 V-Star for 6 years and put over 42k on it. I rode in all types of conditions ,backroads and interstates. It is a great all round bike. At 70+ mph it will wind up tight but will take it. I've ran mine at 80/90 on interstates for 2 /3 hrs at a time without problems. After YOU get accustomed to the feel of it at speed, it really isn't that bad. You must realize that top end of your 1100(if you had a windshield) will only be about 110, at 80/90 your pushing the bike hard, so you must make sure you maintain your machine well if you want it to hold up to riding this way
One other thing.......... I had a friend fall victim to this...... switching from a sport bike to a cruiser........ IT WILL NOT LEAN OR CORNER ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR SPORT BIKE ! Please take care and don't forget this when you hit the twisties or you'll be in big trouble. ride safe Rat |

Thanks for the tip Rat. But you don't think it is winding up the bike too much and idea what the rpm's are at that speed?
If you plan on riding around the 75 mph speed limit most of the time , I don't think you'll have a problem. If you wanted to run 80/90 all the time .... yeah it would eventually cause a lot of wear and tear. As fas as RPM's , I don't know what it's turning, but the 1100 has a rev limiter that will keep you from overreving the engine and topping out around 110+ you'll get into it. My guess is it's around 5K at the limiter , so at 75 your probably turning 3500. I never ran a tach on mine so if anyone has they could give you more insite into that Rat |

X2 with rat. Mine has 82k miles on it and just a couple months ago I went on a 900 mile round trip, almost have of which was over 70 mph. I asked all the same quiestions too and found out that it's winding up pretty good but it doesn't seem to bother it.

You'll be fine. I ride my V-star classic on the interstate at 65-70 with no problems. Mine is the 650 so I am sure the 1100 will do just fine. It will sound like it's working pretty hard but you get used to it.
I love my 650 but still wish I had opted for the 1300, it's all good though. |
