I have only ever ridden in-line 4 engined bikes, my last being a Blade 954cc. I like the Aprilia RSV1000, which has a V-twin engine. Please could you explain the engine characteristics of a twin, compared to a 4 cylinder engine.

Here's an analogy: a large displacement V twin is like Cousin Eddy from the Family Vacation movie. Big and strong like a bull elephant, but not very fast or quick witted. A fast reving in line 4 is more like Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith show: Hyperactive, buzzing about like fly that just downed a case of Mountain Dew but when he's off the Dew, wimpy and weak at the knees.Mid sized V twins like the Aprilia, Ducati, old Honda Shadows, Ascots, CX 500-650s tend to rev faster than the big Harley, Victory and Japanese road barges. As such, they will have good low speed torque characteristics, but no where near the extent as the big guys. While individual engine designs have a lot of influence, most V twins don't have instant on rev capability as inline 4s. For hot dogging it, that's not so hot but for rideability, that's a plus.
