I've only been on a 2004 r6 and they are great fun. I dont have any figures but I pulled out onto a B-road (British Roads) and had quite easily caught up with the car that must have been doing at least 60mph in not many seconds at all. If your after a road bike I'd personally go for the r6 as you will use the gears alot more, probably handles better, doesn't want to wheelie every time you turn the throttle (does not mean the r6 will not jump up on you though). I've heard that you cant get anywhere near the full capabilities of an r1 on the roads.

Too fast. I have been riding for 31 years, the R6 is plenty fast for the street if you can afford insurance for it! Unless you ride in the middle of, say, Nevada you are wasting money, body parts, and your driving record/privileges on a R1!

as the years have progressed, Yamaha has been making more modifications to the engine and to the bikes, so the newest bike will go faster, it just depends really on what modifications are done to the bike.my boyfriend had a 04 R1 and he had a power commander fitted, dropped the front sprocket by one tooth, micron exhausts, de cat, and had a custom remap done and the bike dynoed at 180bhp and his top speed was190. he now has a 07 Colin Edwards racing rep R1 and it has a power commander fitted, and the new bike is quicker than the old one although we havent had it dynoed yet as he wants more mods done to it before that. the top speed that he has gotten at the minute is 150mph as he's still feeling the bike out.i hope this helps.
