Default is an 01 sv650 thermostat controlled by the sensor?

i put an 02 motor in an 01 sv650. i have an aftermarket radiator with out the temp sensor hooked up. ive never had a problem with the 01 motor over heating. but now its over heating daily, even riding down the interstate. My question is , is the thermostat on the 02 motor controlled electronically by the heat temp sensor? Do i have to have the thermostat in or can i take it out and run the fan direct? all input is welcome
