Default How do I know if my muffler needs to be replaced?

I drive a 98 Ford Escort. Currently, it drives VERY loudly. When I am pressing on the gas, it almost sounds like a motorcycle. But only when I am pressing on the gas. Is that my muffler or something else? And, if it is my muffler, how much will it cost to fix on average?

Doodles,It could be as simple as a gasket from the header that is connected to the engine where it attaches to the header pipe or at any connection along the exhaust system. Or the muffler. You sound like you are not familiar with cars...if thats the case take a friend with you to a muffler shop. It might help you from being taken for a financial ride.
