I need some instructions to replace the water pump on a 1983 Honda Shadow VT500C?

I'd like to know if this can be done myself or must be done by the dealer. Thanks

Any job on any engine can be done by the owner. Mechanics aren't anyone special except we have the training and follow instructions well. We often take pictures of things before we take something apart because of memory overload. LOL Get a service manual from a Honda dealer. (most of them have the manuals) and just read it and follow the step by step. A quality set of tools is suggested and if you don't have a"feel"for the tightness of bolts (which is a learned thing) use a click type torque wrench when reassembling the engine. Torque specs are usually listed in the instructions or on a"grade chart"in the back of the service manual. Also you may need to convert inch/pounds to foot/pounds or most likely the torques will be metric. NM/KG I enjoy working on my own stuff sometimes since I retired from the auto dealers service departments. It gives you a sense of pride to be able to say you repaired it yourself and saves you a ton of money.BTW, remember that old rule.....lefty loosy, righty tighty. Turn the bolts to the left to loosen them and right to tighten. Also remember the engine is aluminum and threads will pull out real easy if a bolt is overtightened.
