It has 6 gears with Neutral between first and second. From Neutral, one down is first, about half a shift back up goes back to Neutral, up from there, is 2 and up each time until the OD light comes on, then you are in 6th. So it is 1-N-2-3-4-5-6. Of course clicking down always goes one gear down from where you were unless you are at the bottom in first.

Same as any other bike built since I think the late 60's early 70's. The government made the manufacturer's go with a standard pattern so people would not get confuse when going from one bike to another. 1 down and the rest up. Just a matter of how many gears your bike has then. 4, 5, or 6 speed.
