Default Honda transmission help needed

I have a '75 CB500T I have been getting back on the road for the last year... just when I thought I was ready to ride I find a transmission problem.

It slips in 2nd gear (only in 2nd) under any level or power, it holds when down shifting to slow but slips if you forget and try to accelerate in 2nd.

I have never worked on on of these transmissions, any one have any ideas? Is it hard to take the gear set out and replace the bad gears?

Thanks, Howard

Sounds like the dogs are worn. This happens when someone "misses" a gear a lot. You need to split the cases to get to the transmission.

Default honda transmission

thanks for the info, do you need special tools? do you think the 2nd gear cogs just need to be replaced?

I don't think you'll need any specil tools. Maybe the nut for the clutch hub but I'm not sure if you need to remove it. Yes you'll need to rplace the gears. Check them all out carefully. They may not look too bad but it doesn't take much. The gears won't be cheap either. Some I have seen are $100 or so each.

As long as it is just worn dogs you should be ok. If it has any broken teeth I wouldn't ride it. The way you describe it though it is just dogs. While you have it apart check the shift forks out real good too. If they show much sifn of wear or if they look like they have been warm you'll want to replace those too. Tear it apart before you order parts that way you can order everything at one time. Take pics as you go too so you can get it back together the right way. You do have manual don't you?

Hi,
thanks, i have the manual, I had it apart far enough to replace the clutch, I just hate the thought of pulling the engine and separating the cases. Never been fond of tranny work. it's running SO well 'cept for 2nd gear. 40 mile trip on Tuesday!
