Exactly how important are back protectors in jackets? Looking for a jacket of my own now (cousin is getting sick of me mooching off him:D) and I noticed that some jackets have the pocket for a protector and some don't.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question:o

My jacket has one. Look at it like a gun: It's better to have one and not need it, then need one and not have it.

Your buddy has a tow chain hanging off his pickup. You're gonna grab the chain and 'go for a ride'....want one?

A lot of the jackets I've seen have foam protectors. Are these any good? Should I be looking for the CE rated inserts? Or is there something else worth looking for?

Anything's better than nothing. Try before you buy, though. If it's not comfortable you won't wear it, and then it won't do you any good.

I have a rather large CE rated back protector in my Jacket and I never know it's there anymore.
