Default What would you do different in cycle wreck?

What would you do different in cycle wreck?

My boss called to check up on me to see how I was coming along. I told him that since my lay-down 4 weeks ago, I have had plenty of time to think & watch cycle mishaps on "you tube", watch safety equipment demos and read up on latest safety gear. He asked me, "What would you have done different?" . . . and I told him.

But I am interested to know, did you learn anything from your mishap and "What would you have done different?" . . . if you have had a lay-down, motorcycle mishap, accident, wreck.

It only took me once to learn not to grab the front brake while moving slowly with the forks turned. Laying a bike down in the middle of a busy intersection at 5mph carries a low level of injury but a high level of embarassment.

The best line I have heard: Dress for the crash. You should always were protective gear at all times preparing for what might happen. Most wrecks happen on motorcycles because of OTHER peoples driving, so you never know when it is going to happen. A proper helmet, jacket, pants, and footwear need to be worn at all time.

Haven't wrecked, but did drop the bike a couple of times. most valuable lesson learned: make sure the kickstand is down BEFORE dismounting!!

I have done the kickstand move once, but luckily I was close enough to my garage wall and GSXR stock mirrors are apparently made of something close to steel and no damage was done since the mirror kept it up

Those damn painted surfaces in the rain.

I slipped and fell going in a straight line at 10 MPH in the rain on the giant STOP on the ground. I would have used only the rear brake had I realized how slippery it was.

Oh God there have been so many things I won't do again.

I hold the clutch in when starting as the neutral light can fail and over it went, in 1st gear. Now I set on it and hold it in.

I don't like forward controls as you can not stand up on them, if needed. A friend on a bike with them on it and I were run off the road by an oncoming car. We both hit a large hole hidden in the grass but I was up off the seat about 6" and made it fine. His seat hit him in the rear so hard he went over the bars and the bike also flipped landing on him.

I ride with my foot over the rear brake pedal and ready to use both brakes when I'm anywhere near cars or just in a crowded area. I've had too many close calls. I see some with their feet way up on highway pegs 1/2 asleep not ready to stop or slow.

Very good advice, but I do take mine off when taking a shower or going to bed.
