Default Brand New to Riding (Need Help)

Hey guys,
I'm brand new to riding but I've definitely always wanted to join in, just never had the means.
Now, I've basically figured out Sports bikes are definitely my style, and I've already found a bike that looks, and feels perfect for me, only problem is it's the Triumph Daytona 675, which is waaay to much bike right now.
I've already gotten learning how to ride out of the way, having taken the Safety course for both novice and intermediate, but that only helped on riding like a 125cc dirtbike... not exactly anything that will really help.
So I realized I'm definitely going to need a starter bike to get me going with the feel and power of a sports bike. But I really don't have a clue which would be best for me.

Little background, I'm 6'1" and only about 150, but slowly building up hopefully by the time I can ride I'll be around 170 so decently built frame.

Now would my best choice of bike be something like a 250 Ninja, or slightly larger to get used to the difference like a 500 Ninja, or Suzuki GS500F?

Any input is welcome and would be appreciated, preferences for certain bike and reasons are a definite plus, similar stories? go for it

Thanks!

The SV650 and Ninja 650 are also good options. Dual sports are another type to consider if you are interested in mixing in some off-road riding.

Check out insurance rates before buying, especially when considering sport style bikes. Depending on age and location, rates can vary wildly.

Dodsfall is right, before you buy anything checkout the insurance. The insurance could stop you from getting a sports bike and you may have to settle for something else until you can get the ride you want. The most important thing is to get a ride you feel comfortable with. Your riding ability's will always improve, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect of biking.

Good luck on finding your ride.

Having said that you're 6'1 and ~150, I think the Ninja 250R would be too small for you and seeing that you seem to have atleast a partial knowledge for actually riding... I think I'd go with the 500 Ninja. My cuzzin just got a Ninja 250R this past week, I believe it was Tuesday and she's 5'2 110 soaking wet and she wishes she would have went a bit bigger, I myself was going to get the 250R and now I'm assessing different options having heard what she says. She does absolutely love it though, but that's just my input. I'm by far no expert and at the most a beginner having rode for about 6months alone, I don't own my own bike either, I just have nice uncles. But that's just my thought.

I think if someone is telling you they bought any type of sports bike and are bored of it they aren't riding the bike to it's full potential, even with a 250cc sports bike. I do agree that there is a size difference between the 250's, 500's, 600's and 650 +. You being a rather tall person with a little bit of experience I would suggest something in the 500cc range. I suggest the GS500F. This bike looks and rides like a sports bike, but most insurance companies see it as an upright bike and the rates reflect that.
My last bit of advice is simple. Find something you like that fits you and wont scare the crap out of you while riding. Motorcyles are fun, so go find a fun bike and enjoy!

A ninja 500 will feel a little small, it would work fine but I would say go with the gs500, or an sv650...once you get comfortable on it you will be glad you went with a bigger bike IMO

Thanks a lot for the input guys!

I'm definitely leaning more towards the GS500F, now all I need to do is find one for less than like 2k... hahaha

I've been looking around for a while and had originally decided on a 250R to get started but having just gone out and actually sat on one, I realized it is not the bike for me. I think the 500 will be a great start with a nice balance between sporty feel and not killing myself, and after talking with some people who know a little about the insurance issue, literally they said if it has an R in the name the insurance will be higher, the fact that it has an F basically drops the insurance tremendously. So that is definitely the front runner, and hopefully after a year or so of riding that and getting used to everything I can finally get my D675.

I like Dual Sports for first bikes, easy to ride, cheap to fix, very forgiving...and you can cut across that vacant lot if you need to.

Honda XLs, Suzuki DRs, Kawi KLRs...

Why is the triumph to much bike? I learned on a suzuki 650 when I was 18, and am now relearning many years later on a Yamaha 550 and Honda CB750. It's all about common sense and respect for the bike. Get on, don't exceed your limits, easy on the clutch, easy on the throttle, easy on the brakes, and you'll be fine.

What I mean by too much bike is the fact that it's over 7k and I know I'm going to drop it, and that just doesn't seem fun to me haha.
Racing-esque bikes just seems really powerful, and if I don't trust myself on it, it definitely isn't for me yet.
Once I get used to riding and can handle a 675cc bike I will, but until then, no way.
