I got a '99 Honda Shadow, 12,800 miles, the chain is about halfway through its life cycle, needs new front fork seals (but to my understanding they're not too expensive,) including 2 helmets, saddle bags, a pair of chaps (dunno if i'll wear 'em lol,) and there are no scratches or dings on this bike at all. I'm giving him $2,500 for everything.

Don't sound bad to me for a deal. Fork seals aren't too expensive but can be salty to put on. Basically the forks have to come off to do it.

So how long does a chain usually last on a bike?

Depends on really the quality of the chain and how good it was maintained. When it gets over halfway or starts gettin' noisy when you push the bike backwards it's time for a new one. Sprockets should be replaced when a chain is replaced, worn sprockets will ruin a new chain fast.

It's about halfway now and seems to run perfectly fine... the guy has been waxing the chain.. I forgot how often he told me to do it.. how often is it recommended to spray some wax on a bikes chain? How can you tell if the chain has been maintained well?

Look for proper chain slack and no rust. There is a measurement for the chain links to tell how far it's stretched but you'd need at least dial calipers to measure it. Sounds to me like the guy took care of it. If it's an O-ring chain about every 400 miles would be a good waxing point, that's what it says in my Ninja's manual.
