Default Bought a used KTM

It's a little late to be asking this but I have never owned a KTM and I was wondering if it is considered a good quality bike? It is a MXC 200. I had to go ahead and buy it simply because the guy was practically giving it away. He was trying to sell all his assets during a pending divorce. I rode it and gave it a good once over but I haven't bought a dirt bike since I sold my old 83 Maico.

Thanks

KTMs are excellent bikes. Made in Austria if I remember right. Parts are a little on the expensive side. Usually they made 3 models in each cc range. The MXC (motocross), the DXC (desert cross) and the EXC (enduro style).

Here's a site you can check the VIN if you need parts so you get the right ones. http://www.ktmcyclehutt.com/checkvin.htm

It's a great bike sweetscience, no question about it!
people here say that it is a touch too nervous for places with bad traction, and you have a motorcross version... so depending on your personal taste, ridding skills and kind of places you ride, maybe you would like to smooth the bike a bit. If so there are lot's of ways to do it, beeing the cheapest way to start: the exaust valve oppening time. But I'm a 4 stroke guy... maybe other people can add something...
What year is it?

it is a 2000..... well, I will probably do a mix.....not competetively but for fun....I thought about a bigger sprocket..... I had a full blown race Maico 250 before and made it work for me although the power was insane on that bike and I would spin the bike tire up every hill....you had to be a master with the clutch......
thanks for the info....

Great bike. The MXC is not the KTM supercross/motorcross racer - that would be the SX version with the lighter flywheel and smaller gas tank. But I guess some people may consider this the KTM motorcross version. The MXC has the close ratio gear box like the SX, but a larger fuel tank and heavier flywheel with lighting capability but comes with no lights - seems preferrence of faster trail riders and GNCC and Hare Scramble racers . The EXC is like the MXC in the heavier flywheel and larger fuel tank but comes with lights and a wide ratio transmission - lower first gear and higher top speeds good for both technical trails and fire roads.

Biggest problem with the MXC in the 2000 year version will be the suspension system. Need of course to get it sprung right for your weight and then revalved for your terrian and ability. The PDS system has come a long ways since year 2000. KTMtalk has a bunch of threads on fork valve stacks if your inclined to revalve the forks yourself. While the shock can be revalved at home most of us send it off due to issues with getting all the air purged out between the two pistons within the body of the shock.. A later year shock is better in a number of ways.....

great info.... I think the guy before had the forks reworked but the shock is probably stock.... so it sounds like you are saying that the sx and the mxc have the same engine just different gears? thanks

Basically the engine is the same. The weight of the flywheel between the SX and MXC/EXC models is different - causing the MXC/EXC motors to rev slower but makes the engines are more tractable. The gearing or transmission in both the SX/MXC are the same (close ratio).

Bottom line - Transmissions are the same in MXC and SX. Flywheel stator with lighting coil are the same between the MXC and EXC.

Hope this help you out.
