Default Chain lubrication

Any suggestions on how to lube the chain with the spray on stuff without getting it all over half the bike?

Years ago when I rode I had a chain with a master link, it was a breeze to pop it off, clean and lube it well! There seems to be no master link on my Reb chain!

Also, what about using 80 - 90 weight gear oil?

Thanks for the help!

Been ridin' again now for 3 weeks....
put 600 miles on...
added saddles bags...
made a passenger backrest....
made a new passenger seat....
added a tool bag...
changed the oil...
checked the plugs...
Havin' a blast!

Hey Bippie!

Here is a good article on chain lubes http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/motorcycle-chain-lube/

I have not lubed mine since I installed it a little while ago. It is time to do it and came across this article and I think I am gonna try the MFR to see how it works.

The 80-90 weight will probably cause some "fly-off" of the oil onto the frame, tire and rim.

I use chain wax on my 450, it has a x ring chain.

I have oiled my chain by locking down the front break with a velcro strap, place a 2x4 block under the kick stand and jackup the swingarm on the RIGHT SIDE, be sure the tire is free spin and you can clean and lube till your hearts content.

BTW It even works when your on a trip if you have the block of wood and velcro strap with you, just stop at a tire shop and borrow a jack. It works for me.

SORRY GUYS: The chain oiling instructions above are for the 250, I wish it would work on the 450 but the mufflers are in the way. I need to figure out a way to do it on the 450.

Well for me is very easy..:) I clean it with Kerosene (as per Honda instructions) with a rag, and then lube it.

Yep I have one at home also, but the block & velcro strap work good when your not home.

On the 450, I've been able to use a car scissors jack from a Toyota  I carefully place the jack under the frame cross-brace just in front of the rear wheel. Believe it or not, it holds it fairly steady, tho' it obviously wouldn't hurt to use safety straps to further stabilize it.

Once the rear wheel is elevated, I place newspaper beneath the chain, slowly rotate the rear wheel by hand while spraying chain lube on the bottom run of the chain.

It's best to lube the chain after a ride while it's still warm. Let the lube cure for 12-24 hours afterwards for minimal sling.
