I just bought a new 2006 honda rebel 2 weeks ago, and i am loving it, being a new rider, it has been a great fit.
The only problem i'm having is the front brakes are really sqeaky. Is this because the bike is new, and it will work itself out, or is there a quick fix to alleviate the problem. Any info would be appreaciated.!!! |

Ive had a problem with this on the new vstar we got my wife, but i am thinking it is something in the metallics of the brake pad that just has to wear out, like a shaflake or something, it will squeek a bit then you might ride a week or two before it does it again.

On cars about 75% of brake noise can be attributed to dirt. It doesn't take much.
On the Rebel I noticed that the brakes would squeak a little after a rainy ride. Road dirt and oils fouled the pads for a bit. Would sometimes get the same sounds after a quick rinse. Funny but I don't notice the problem on the KZ. It has two big disks up front so maybe it takes less pressure to slow. :?: Dan |

Squeaking on car brakes is usually caused not by the pad rubbing the rotor, but by the pad back rubbing on the caliber and causing a vibration. On car pad replacement I have always used this stuff you put on the back of the pads before installing them on the caliper. I think the deal is that it provides some cushion so that the vibration doesn’t start oscillating and cause the squeal. Has anyone tried this on motorcycle pads?

It's been a common problem on both Suzuki's I've owned. Simple fix -- pull the pads off and put some brake pad grease on the back of the pad and then reinstall them. Might as well scuff the pad surface up a bit too while you have them off.

My '06 front brakes squeaked for the first 3,000 miles or so. When i took it in for the 600 mile service i mentioned it to the dealer and he chuckled and said they would make sure the brakes were working properly but that it is quite common for the sqeaking to occur for the first few thousand miles. He mentioned something about the type of pads Honda uses and the type of rotor on the Rebel, blah, blah, blah... LOL

OK, you're a new rider. Its possible you can kill two birds with one stone. Go to a parking lot where you can practice your emergency braking (essentially, picking an arbitrary line on the ground, and applying your front and back brakes at that line, to see how quickly (in distance) you can stop, from continually increasing speeds.)
We ALL should do this from time to time, but newbies especially. In a lot of cases, the hard braking will eliminate the squealing noises you mention. If it doesn't, you 're still way ahead of the game, because you've trained your hands and feet how they should (and very likely WILL) behave in the case of an emergency stop. brent |
