Rode his 1972 Harley Super Glide 83,000 miles (1133572km) around the world in the early 133572km. Barr had served in the US Marines and had lost both his legs below the knee while fighting in Angola. Determined to raise awareness of the plight of disabled people, he mounted his Super Glide (owned from new, and already with 150,000 miles/24140km under its wheels) and set off. Starting in Johannesburg, he rode up through Africa:

I'd never have made it through Zaire without belt drive where floods were the biggest problem, as there was no way of knowing how deep the water was

. He was almost drowned when the bike fell over and landed on top of him. Dave was barely able to keep his mouth above water level and hold on until a couple of villagers came along and rescued him. After Africa, Dave explored Europe and Scandanavia and crossed the Arctic circle before returning to the States. Then up to Alaska, back home to California', then down through South America, by boat to Hong Kong and by Harley through China, across the Gobi Desert and Mongolia, through Siberia, Moscow and Europe again. Dave Barr later wrote a book about his experiences on the road, entitled Riding the Edge, published by White Horse Press.
