Joined Harley-Davidson's engineering department in 1908, under George Nordberg, and was a key figure there for over 20 years. Also helped Nordberg and William Davidson to expand production in 1914. He finally left in 1929 to become chief engineer to the Sankyo company in Japan. His job there was to set up production of Harleys under licence at Shinagawa, a deal which had been masterminded by Alfred Child. Harleys were initially built up from parts imported direct from Milwaukee, but by 1935 Sankyo was making all-Japanese Harley Davidsons.
