Hap Scherer was Harley's publicity manager in the early days, having joined the company in 1915. He was a particularly strong proponent of the Sport Twin, realizing that the whole American motorcycle industry was in danger of only catering to the limited enthusiast market, with big V-twins. Scherer, along with other industry salesmen, wanted to expand the market with easier to ride machines like the Sport Twin. In 1920, he actually rode one from Denver to Chicago in 48 hours, but sales fell off after he left the company. He was sacked by Walter Davidson after allegedly co-operating with Harley-Davidson's main rivals. Scherer later went to work for Rich Budelier's new Harley-Davidson dealership in Los Angeles.
