Torque

From CycleChaos

Jump to: navigation, search

Torque is the twisting affect of a force acting against a body, equal to the force, multiplied by the distance of that force from the axis of rotation.

Formula

Torque = Force x Distance

  1. ft. lb.: T= 1 lb. x 1 ft. (The force of one pound acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one foot)
  2. in. lb.: T= 1 lb. x 1 in. (The force of one pound acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one inch)
  3. kg-m: T= 1 kg x 1 m (The force of one kilogram acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one meter)
  4. kg-cm: T= 1 kg x 1 cm (The force of one kilogram acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one centimeter)
  5. N-m: T= 1 kg-m (The force of one newton acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one meter)

The terms of ft. lb., in. lb., kg-m, and kg-cm are all expressions of the force created by weight. The Newton-meter (N-m) is a metric term used to express the force required to move weight. One newton is the force required to accelerate a mass of 1 kg to 1 m per second.

Conversion

1 KG = 10N-m = 10kg-m

To Metric

  • 1 ft. lb. x 0.1383 =kg-m
  • 1 in. lb. x 0.011525 =kg-m
  • 1 ft. lb. x 1.383 =N-m
  • 1 in. lb. x 0.11525 =N-m

To U.S.

  • 1 kg-m x 7.233 =ft. lb.
  • 1 kg-m x 86.796 =in. lb.
  • 1 N-m x 0.7233 =ft. lb.
  • 1 N-m x 8.6796 =in. lb.
