The engine was a Liquid cooled cooled Four stroke, transverse three cylinder, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder.. The engine featured a 12.0:1 [[compression ratio]]. It employed wet aluminium alloy Nikasil surfaced liners with a bore of 79mm. Stroke was 65mm as the previous generation 885cc and 955cc engines. Ignition was electronic and the fuelling was by a sequential port injection electronically managed system from Hitachi. Quoted output was 149 hp DIN, which put it very close to the opposition of the day. It did however develop high torque at lower revs than the 4 cylinder sports bikes, which made it easy and relaxing to ride on twisty roads.
It featured forged pistons, and of course forged conrods and crankshafts. Some sites indicate that standard Daytonas made do with cast items, but this is true only for the pistons. All Triumph engines in living memory have used forged rods and cranks.
==Drive== | |||
Power was moderated via a wet multi-plate clutch driven directly from the crankshaft through straight cut gears. The gearbox featured six speeds, all indirect. Final drive was by chain.
==Chassis== | |||
It came with a 120/70 ZR17 front [[tire]] and a 190/50 ZR17 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via 2 x 320 mm Discs, 4 piston calipers in the front and a Single 220 mm disc, 2 piston [[caliper]] in the rear. The front suspension was a 45 mm Forks with dual rate springs and adjustable preload, compression and rebound damping while the rear was equipped with a Monoshock with adjustable preload, compression and rebound damping. The Daytona 955i Special Edition was fitted with a 21 Liters / 5.5 US gal / 4.6 Imp gal fuel tank. The bike weighed just 188 kg / 414 lbs.
