Presented in its final configuration at Bologna Motor Show in December 1986 and marketed since April 1987, the AF1 125 108 Project marks the official entry in a market that saw the second half of the 80s as the period where 125 made the leap from definitive advanced motion-read they were only in 1985, the year of submission of the parent AS-R to become replicas of the real, especially in terms of driveability, the maxi-motorcycle then. If the AS-R was a transition period as an, albeit valid, updated ST / STX, the AF1 is a completely different approach to a 125 or a motorcycle learned technically, but also can provide emotional than ever, some sixteen years before would never even dared dream about a 125.

The AF1 was a long-term project, in fact, was presented for the first time at the Milan Show in 1985 and immediately caused a sensation for its modern style. However, Aprilia had other plans for 1986 and therefore chose to renew its range enduro (then very popular) and introducing new models at the same time introducing the AF1, but in a lesser capacity, or in the 50cc version. Although dedicated to fourteen, the small AF1 completely revolutionized the industry, becoming for kids age a daydream. Of course, the sporty 125 accomplices also introduced from other homes during the 1986 el'ormai dated AS-R, the interest in the prototypes and the AF1 AF1 Aprilia 50 was that it was forced to accelerate its new presenting AF1 125 in the final "Project 108". (Click to see picture attachment with the era of the prototypes. Interestingly, the Replica version presented at the Salon of Bologna in December 1986 and that in different configuration, eventually made its appearance only at the Milan Furniture Fair 1987)

Line exciting colors specially designed, top-level equipment, technical and performance: these are the only ingredients in April for its new sports for 1987.

Price in 1987: 4,350,000 Lira works. Available colors: white / blue and blue / white

The bike soon

AF1 108 The Project shows an aesthetic inspired by the motion of Reggiani that runs in the championship colors designed to enhance work of designers, but without being too aggressive on this and then be succeeded in the difficult task of a sport bike, but same time harmonious and elegant. Surely a movement that is much different from other replies that Aprilia will sell to them shortly. Instrumentation, finally, is the most modern and may have produced in Japan in this regard, most scholars will remember a certain similarity with the instrumentation of some big Japanese in those years. Very good electrical controls always produced by Italy's CEV. On either side of the shell against the inner surfaces of the fairing that link up to the frame, leads to the oil tank to the mixing machine (right side) and the expansion of the Cooling Circuit placed on the opposite side. Repaired by the side panels, the triangular central frame are placed for the air filter box (right side) and the battery on the opposite side. The seat, protected by lock is removable in a single pezzzo and access to the compartment-tools and documents. The quality of plastics and assemblies is very good and certainly good can also be called painting. Without doubt, over a year of studies on prototypes has paid off.

Cycling

The dual-beam steel frame of AF1 is a nice change compared to the AS-R: the two upper uprights are drawn tube and a rectangular section, as the motorcycle racing in a straight line connecting the headstock of the attack swingarm. Cots and lower support saddle are in the pipe. The frame and swingarm complete shock weighs 27kg. The rear swingarm is constructed from steel plate and is coupled to the known rear suspension (not Marzocchi regolanbile) progressive ODA and therefore allows the rapid dismantling of the rear wheel, mounted cantilever. Aprilia front fork design is a conventional telescopic hydraulic fork with 36mm stanchions and is characterized by the term HPF (hydralic Power Fork), which has the inevitable (a real fashion in the mid-80) anti-sinking and is adjustable on ' Hydraulic four positions (right leg). The braking system of the new bill now has a valid Single disc 260mm front Brembo calipers with two parallel pistons and a 240mm rear disc with dual-piston calliper always, but opposites. New are also the beautiful wheel for 16 "mounting the sports-ply tires Metzeler MBS, a 125 exclusive, size 100/80-16 front and 120/80-16 rear. In essence, a cycle that makes you quickly forget the feeling of too poor precision and lightness of the 125 who had only two years earlier.

Engine

The engine Rotax 127 Strada '87 version is the same engine mounted on the AS-R, although several changes they have greatly increased the effective power. We see such as:

· New aluminum cylinder, always with liner, the diagram more stringent

Annual Report of high compression to 15,1:1 (14,2:1 the AS-R)

• The RAVE valve, because of the tendency of the system to stand by the work of scaling, is always a pneumatic, but is now equipped with a system that is more accessible and by reference to cable, valve and allows the membrane to make a run complete work whenever we act on the rear brake pedal.

· New Dell'Orto PHBH 28 ND calibrated deeply magazine (PHBH 26BS on AS-R)

Annual Report and final gear ratios elongated

With the changes, the engine of the notes well AF1 27.88 hp at the wheel 10000giri: a significant increase in power compared to 20.71 hp at 9500giri recorded for the AS-R despite the Aprilia has declared for both models 26cv . Maximum power aside, the most obvious difference appears to be considerably more thrust power delivery at high revs, but also because of gear longer, much more sluggish at low and medium rpm. Clearly then why in the tests taken by about 400m 50km / h, the AF1 has marked a deterioration compared to even less potent AS-A: a time of 20.887 seconds and a detected output speed of 84.900 km / h are much shorter compared with 19.157 seconds and 104.046 mph record made by the AS-R. Regarding the speed, also because of a fairing more aerodynamic, the AF1 check a speed of well-155km / h against the 140km / h from its forerunner. The engine weight is 23.12kg. (An increase of more than 2kg over the AS-R due to the presence of goodwill and Electric)
