The Ariel Leader was a twin, two-stroke Naked motorcycle produced by Ariel between 1958 and 1965. It could reach a top speed of 70 mph (112 km/h). Claimed horsepower was 17.17 HP (12.8 KW) @ 6250 RPM.
Leader
The Leader was probably Ariel's bravest foray into motorcycle manufacturing. It was an innovate, fully enclosed 250cc two-stroke released in 1959. Producing peak output of 18bhp, with the twin-cylinder engine based on that of the German Adler. The leader was intended to be a proper motorcycle with the convenience of a scooter. The Leader actually worked rather well, with a top speed of about 70mph (112kph) and excellent handling. But the public didn't take well to it. Ariel later striped the bodywork to produce the Arrow, with a tuned 20bhp engine in the Super Sports and Golden Arrow variants. Although the Arrow sold well it wasn't enough to stop Ariel from going under in 1967.
Engine
The engine was a air cooled twin, two-stroke. A 54.0mm bore x 54.0mm stroke result in a displacement of just 249.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a overhead valves (ohv).
Drive
The bike has a 4-speed transmission. Power was moderated via the Dry.
Chassis
It came with a 3.25-16 front tire and a 3.25-16 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via expanding brake (drum brake) in the front and a expanding brake (drum brake) in the rear. The front suspension was a trailing link oil-damped while the rear was equipped with a swingarm. The Leader was fitted with a 2.38 Gallon (9.00 Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just 330.69 pounds (150.0 Kg). The wheelbase was 50.98 inches (1295 mm) long.
1958 - 1965 Ariel Leader
Manufactured from 1958 to 1965, the Leader has a 247 cc two stroke parallel twin engine with 17HP at 6750rpm and could reach a speed of 70mph.
