Harley-Davidson was forced to defend itself in a legal action instigated by Bendix in 1924 when Victor Bendix claimed that the Harley-Davidson clutch design infringed his own patent. Bill Harley had designed a multi-plate clutch very similar to the Bendix, and following legal advice, the Harley-Davidson version was rapidly redesigned and $18,000 was said to have been paid in damages.
