An early form of racing in America, using banked tracks made up of narrow wooden planks. This had a brief popularity, with tracks being built all over the country. But although smooth compared to contemporary roads, they offered far less grip, and the splinters could produce horrific injuries when riders fell off. They were soon superseded by oval dirt tracks.
