Brad Andres wasn't a factory-hacked racer, but achieved great things with the side-valve KR in the 1950s. He won the National Championship in 1955 and was second to Joe Leonard the following year. The KR itself was something of a minor miracle. Despite an apparently antiquated side-valve motor (with roots going back before the Second World War), it won the American flat-track National Championship 13 times.
