Lubrication system in four-stroke engines in which the oil is carried in a separate container. Oil drains into the sump and is pumped into the separate container, keeping the sump "dry."

One benefit of this type of oil storage is it prevents frothing caused by the crankshaft, on the other hand it can make adjusting oil levels much more difficult.
