Nineteen forty nine was a milestone year for Harley-Davidson. It was the second year of production for the new Panhead V-Twin engine and the first year for a new front end, the legendary Hydra Glide. The 1949 EL was also one of the last 61 c.i. engines Harley-Davidson would produce.

The bike has a 3-speed transmission. Power was moderated via the mulitplate, dry.
It came with a 5.00-16 front tire and a 5.00-16 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via expanding brake (drum brake) in the front and a expanding brake (drum brake) in the rear. The front suspension was a spring forks while the rear was equipped with a hardtail. The EL was fitted with a 3.75 Gallon (14.19 Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just 551.16 pounds (250.0 Kg). The wheelbase was 59.49 inches (1511 mm) long.
