A company-sponsored group of Harley-Davidson riders, it is the first such group in the motorcycle industry and probably the most successful. It was formed in 1983 as a means of communication between Harley-Davidson and its customers via ride-outs, newsletters and details of events. So successful has it been that there are now branches of HOG all over the world. The first year's membership is free with a new bike, though HOG's development as a social group is underlined by the numbers who stay in it after that first year. Seventeen years on, HOG is the world's largest manufacturer-sponsored owners' group, with over half a million members worldwide.
