The engine was a [[air cooled]] single cylinder, four-stroke. A 47.5mm [[bore]] x 45.0mm [[stroke]] result in a [[displacement]] of just 80.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a single overhead cams (sohc).

Stopping was achieved via expanding brake in the front and a expanding brake in the rear. The XR80R was fitted with a 1.8 Gallon (6.80 Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just 154.1 pounds (69.9 Kg). The wheelbase was 47.6 inches (1209 mm) long.

Honda XR80'79 	The 1979 Honda XR80 was sold in 1979 and was available in one color: Tahitian Red. The "HONDA" fuel tank decal was red outlined in white. The seat was black without a side logo. The side cover panels were black and the "XR80" logo on it was red and white. The engine was an 80cc OHC single cylinder with a 5-speed transmission and manual clutch. This was the last year for the "down" pipe exhaust. Also 1979 was the first year for the XR80, which replaced the 1978 XR75. Besides the increase in engine displacement from the XR75, the new XR80 also had a new gas tank design - the fill cap was now centered (opposed to the XR75 where the fill cap was offset to the right), and the shape slightly different. The serial number for the 1979 XR80 began HE01-5000012.
