Overview[edit | edit source]

KTM presented its brand new Supermoto, the 690 SMC. The model is planned to arrive in the US at the end of March or beginning of April this year, but it already determined many Supermoto riders to go ahead and make a deposit for one even though they have never got a feel of it. That probably says a lot about their confidence that KTM rules when it comes to single-cylinder, four-stroke engines.

In this case, the fuel-injected 654cc motor is beloved for showing incredible numbers on the dyno (66 horsepower) and for the fact that it only weighs 305.4 lbs. Stop reading the numbers over and over again and try to imagine how this thing will perform on tight roads because street legality was a must while developing it. Not only it will leave behind all the supersports (only on the twisties) like most of these thumpers do, but you’ll be finishing your coffee before they even get to the point you’ve planned to meet. Strongest competitor for the new born KTM is without a doubt the Husqvarna SM610E. It is striking similar to KTM’s new born and features a 576cc four-stroke, 4 valves, SOHC, Liquid Cooled Single which gets fed through an electronic fuel injection system. Husqvarna’s engine is weaker than KTM’s (54 horsepower), but still able to make a statement in the Supermoto class that both try to lead. Just check out the comparative results of the dyno.

You will also find the BMW G 650 Xmoto with 52 HP followed by Yamaha XT 660X and Aprilia Pegaso 650 Factory, both putting down 48 HP, unimpressive when compared to the leader of the class. We all know who that is, don’t we? Source Top Speed IN THE BEST SUPERMOTO TRADITION Razor-sharp Supermoto technology combined with the latest engine technology makes the 690 SMC a more than worthy successor to the winning 660 SMC, which can still be encountered on Supermoto tracks around the world. KTM is regarded as the inventor of the series Supermotos and it has dominated this spectacular category for the last decade. With the 690 SMC, KTM has set new standards for this especially sporty series segment. DRIFT EVERY DAY The basic concept of the 690 SMC is identical with the 690 Enduro, but was adapted for the demands on a Supermoto. As an addition to the new LC4 family, the 690 SMC clearly holds a sportier position than the 690 Supermoto, but is more suited to everyday riding than a 450 SMR and in particular possesses unlimited road homologation with all the power. Or to be precise: 62 perfectly controllable horses (45 kW) meet a 139-kilo featherweight. A trendsetting tubular space frame design Self-supporting rear fender-fuel tank Excellent suspension components from WP Super-sporty ergonomics Universal capabilities State-of-the-art LC4 engine technology Unrivalled performance Minimal weight CHASSIS

FRAME A supremely innovative and super-sturdy tubular space frame. Developed using the latest analysis and simulation technologies, its construction of thin-walled chrome-molybdenum tubes guarantees maximum torsional rigidity for excellent tracking stability at a negligible weight (just over 8 kilos).

WEIGHT The new 690 SMC is just as sporty as it is light. Ready to ride, the newest LC4-Supermoto weighs just 139 kg without fuel and thus has the basic prerequisite for its superior handling.

REAR FENDER A revolutionary, self-supporting, one-piece fuel tank-rear fender unit, made of robust plastic with no additional metal braces. The optimum use of space combined with sporty ergonomics makes room for a 12-litre tank capacity. An integrated fuel pump is at the bottom and fuelling is accomplished through the lockable tank cap behind the seat. The installation of the supplied foot rests and handles easily readies the bike for pillion use.
