Alfred Child's son, he worked closely with his father importing Harley-Davidsons into Japan. His 400-mile (645-km) test ride of one of the first 61 E Knuckleheads to arrive was not a success: it leaked oil, broke valve springs and needed frequent tappet adjustments. Despite this experience, Richard Child went on to become the official Harley-Davidson importer for Japan after the Second World War.
