Definitely a good course of action to say use the manual as a starting point. I'm not sure enough of this to add it to the article but I believe that the friction additives the article mentions aren't necessarily an issue with lower grade oils. Quite a few Japanese motorcycles will say in the OEM service manual that anything above SE is okay, but will read "SJ with JASO MA".
