The Yamaha TDM 850 was a Liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC Naked motorcycle produced by Yamaha between 1991 and 2001. It could reach a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). Max torque was 56.8 ft/lbs (77.0 Nm) @ 6000 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 76.97 HP (57.4 KW) @ 7500 RPM.

Overview

After spending the better part of the Eighties concentrating on supersport bikes with ever greater performance and technical sophistication, manufacturers have rediscovered the charm of uncomplicated motorcycles and are offering a more rational new generation of sports bikes.

Original and Aggressive

The formula varies according to builder some are opting for remembrances of things past with nostalgically styled machines like the Kawasaki Zephyr, while others are going for classics in the American style, like the Suzuki VX800. Yamaha was trying something new with an original, aggressive style that owes some thing to both the trail bike and the classic machine.

Flexible and Responsive

Very much in the spirit of that vision is the twin-cylinder power unit, taken from the Super Tenere and mounted in a steel Deltabox frame inspired by the supersport bikes. The flexible, responsive TDM is at home virtually anywhere, but is at its best on back roads, where its torquey performance is perfect for the terrain. And, with floating front disc brakes operated by quadruple-piston calipers, the TDM's stopping power is among the best currently available, effortlessly bringing it down from its 125mph top speed.

Engine

The engine was a liquid cooled Liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC. A 88.9mm bore x 88.9mm stroke result in a displacement of just 849.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a double overhead cams/twin cam (dohc). The Engine was very similar to that used in the Yamaha TRX850.

Drive

The bike has a 6 Speed, manual transmission. Power was moderated via the Wet multi-disc, manual.

Chassis

It came with a 110/80-18 front tire and a 150/70-17 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via dual 298 mm discs with 4-piston calipers in the front and a single 245 mm disc with 2-piston calipers in the rear. The front suspension was a Telescopic Forks while the rear was equipped with a Swingarm. monoshock. The TDM 850 was fitted with a 5.28 Gallon (20.00 Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just 436.52 pounds (198.0 Kg). The wheelbase was 57.91 inches (1471 mm) long.

1991 - 1995 Yamaha TDM 850

Derived from the Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Tenere and characterized as Dual Sports or Adventure Sports, the TDM is an 849cc two cylinder bike with 78hp, which came out in 1991.

1996 - 1999 Yamaha TDM 850

The Yamaha TDM 850 has comprehensive, sporty instrumentation, decent switch gear and mirrors, an effective, good looking fairing and ample pillion provision, too. Lots of Yamaha extras (heated grips, luggage etc) are available as well.

2001 Yamaha TDM 850

One of Yamaha's most popular dual-sport machines, the TDM 850 brings together top-notch riding comfort on both asphalt and unsealed roads. The sporty chassis has been finely tuned to provide great stability on the road but offer a comfortable ride when the surface gets rough, while the parallel-twin engine is mated to an intelligently-geared transmission.

Providing plenty of low-end torque, it also delivers excellent hi-revving power for fast highway hauls, even when two-up and fully-loaded. Needless to say that the 200 TDM 850 is also a perfect choice for a commuter, as well.
