Overview[edit | edit source]

Beta RR 400 Enduro

In the year that Beta celebrates its first 100 years of activity on two wheels, Beta Enduro starts with this project, which already thirty years ago had brought it great fame. The Tuscan company launches a KTM derived enduro motorcycle

With the four petrol engines (250, 400, 450, 525), Beta offers all enduro riders the chance to find ttheir real enduro race-ready bike, with a lot of grit, low weights and volumes and ample standard equipment .

Some claim that for best results you should always have the largest possible number of horses.

Beta knows that the reality of the terrain takes into account many variables and for this reason, it launches in 2005 the RR 400 which fits ideally between the small 250, the powerful 450 and the now very powerful, perhaps too powerful, 525.

Immediately noticeable is the design of the bike. The handlebars high enough, the saddle slender and flat, compact tank and well positioned footrests, allow for great ease in the movements of the rider. The shape of the front, in my opinion, is a bit special and can create, in corners, understeer, but on the other hand, the large wheels results in being very stable on fast and uneven surfaces

The engine 400 provides the rider greater ease in driving and managing the power is simple. Slightly less than the 450 in terms of peak maximum output power, this engine is much more smooth and linear in power delivery, a characteristic which becomes really valuable in challenging enduro situation. It ensures outstanding torque at low RPM which is maintained until at medium fast speed. The decline in performance is substantial once the peak has been reached. The 6-speed gearbox contribute to make it a very flexible bike.

"A real enduro race-ready, with a lot of grit, low weights and volumes and ample standard equipment"

Even on Beta, as now on all 4 models, this is the starter motor with the button on the handlebar, become indispensable for both amateurs and many professionals.

The front suspension is a Marzocchi 45 mm USD fork and the rear shock absorber offers a good feel of the surface. The fork, perhaps setting a bit soft in my case, had no problems in absorbing the roughness of the road, while the linkage (unlike KTM mounting of the PDS) makes the rear end less nervous and more intuitive to predict.

With regards the brake system Beta has relied on the new disk technology. A wave floating front disc of 255 mm in diameter and the rear single fixed 240 mm, respectively coupled to a dual-piston caliper and a single piston. We have not found problems of deterioration of performance in the use of the system in stressful situaitons.

The slender superstructure, the details in panels, the flaming red livery and the many tricks from real enduro, the placing on the market of off-road at the same level as its competitors, if excellent. And this is only the first year, imagine the future!
