Charles Cable ran an import-export business from San Francisco in the 1920s, and part of his business was the export of Harleys to Mongolia. The factory was puzzled as to why he never ordered any spare parts and it turned out that he was diverting machines to Japan instead. In the light of this, and because of the lackluster performance of the current Japanese importer, Alfred Child was put in charge of a new Japanese operation; beginning an era of healthy Harley-Davidson exports to the Far East.
