Engine

The engine was a Air cooled cooled Four stroke, 45° V-Twin, Evolution® Valve Train Pushrod-operated, overhead valves with hydraulic, self-adjusting lifters, two valves per cylinder. The engine featured a 8.9:1 compression ratio.

Chassis

It came with a 100/90-19 front tire and a 130/90-16 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via Single 292mm disc 4 piston calipers in the front and a Single 292mm disc 4 piston calipers in the rear. The front suspension was a Conventional cartridge forks while the rear was equipped with a Dual hydraulic shock absorbers adjustable for preload. The XL883R was fitted with a 12.5 Liters / 3.3 US gal fuel tank. The bike weighed just 228.4 kg / 503.0 lbs. The wheelbase was 1524 mm / 60.0 in long.

There remained a certain faction of riders who desired a slightly smaller Harley, but weren't ready to sacrifice performance. For this crowd, the 2002 XL-883R model filled their needs.

Enhanced speed was derived by using a variety of subtle modifications inside the motor along with a specially tuned two-into-one exhaust. The finish on the hot rod motor was both black and polished for a tasteful blend.
