A 86.4mm bore x 86.4mm stroke result in a displacement of just 399.0 cubic centimeters.

The bike has a CVT transmission. Power was moderated via the dry, centrifugal with damper buffers, automatic.

It came with a 120 / 70 - 12in front tire and a 140 / 70 - 14in rear tire. Stopping was achieved via dual 240 mm steel discs, 2-piston floating calipers in the front and a single 240 mm steel disc, 2-piston floating caliper in the rear. The front suspension was a parallelogram composed of four aluminum arms supporting two steering tubes, cantilevered suspension while the rear was equipped with a two dual effect hydraulic shocks, four-position spring preload. The wheelbase was 60.98 inches (1549 mm) long.

The 2012 MY Piaggio MP3 Touring 400 I.E. is a mid-displacement trike that addresses riders who want to spend more time behind the bars, whether solo or two-up. It comes standard with a spacious, two-up seat, with lumbar support for the rider and pillion grab handles, a windshield, for more protection against the elements, and a standard hard trunk, offering one of the best storage capacities in its class.

At its heart lies a liquid-cooled, four-stroke 399cc, single cylinder powerplant mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), that produces 34 horsepower and 37 Nm of torque. In addition, it has a parallelogram front suspension system, which give it superior cornering abilities.
