Brought in by AMF in 1973 to tackle Harley-Davidson's continuing problems. The moving of bike assembly to a factory in York, Pennsylvania had created its own problems, while quality and market share were heading downhill. He made some small improvements to production and forecasting, but probably his biggest contribution was to bring in Jeff Bleustein to head up a new, more professional engineering department and to appoint Vaughn Beals as AMF's man in Milwaukee. Beals was a particularly good choice, as this finally put a senior AMF person in day-to-day contact with Harley-Davidson management. Previously, AMF had been attempting to control both Milwaukee and York plants from its own remote headquarters.
